2048
Swipe, merge, combine — can you reach the elusive 2048 tile?
How to Play
Press arrow keys or swipe to slide all tiles in one direction. Tiles with the same number merge into one with double the value. Every move spawns a new 2 or 4 on a random empty cell. Keep merging to reach 2048 — the game ends when the board fills and no merges are possible.

About This Game
Slide tiles across a 4x4 grid to combine matching numbers. Every move spawns a new tile, and every merge doubles your value. Keep combining until you forge the legendary 2048 tile — or get stuck with a full board.
What is 2048?
2048 is a single-player sliding number puzzle played on a 4×4 grid. You start with two tiles and every move slides every tile on the board in the chosen direction — up, down, left, or right. When two tiles with the same number bump into each other they merge into one tile of double the value, and a new 2 or 4 spawns on an empty cell. Your goal is to keep combining pairs until you forge the legendary 2048 tile. 2048 rewards patient planning over quick reflexes: there is no timer, no enemy, and nothing to stop you thinking three moves ahead. Played with arrow keys on desktop or by swiping on mobile, 2048 is the kind of puzzle that looks simple for thirty seconds and then keeps you staring at the board for twenty minutes. Tips & Strategy
- Pick a corner — usually the bottom-left or bottom-right — and fight to keep your highest tile there for the whole game.
- Build a single sorted staircase along one row or column so every merge cascades into the next without leaving gaps.
- Avoid slides in the direction that would pull your highest tile out of its corner. In practice, that means never pressing 'up' once you've committed to the bottom.
- Don't chase every merge. Sometimes leaving a 4 or 8 alone is better than trapping yourself with a tile out of place.
- Use the undo (U) sparingly. Leaning on it turns the game into a reset-driven grind and stops you learning the board.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you always win at 2048?
There is no guaranteed win, but the corner strategy is the strongest method: lock your highest tile in one corner, build a sorted chain along the adjacent row, and avoid moves that push the highest tile out. With practice, most players can consistently reach 2048, and many reach 4096 and beyond.
What is the highest possible score in 2048?
There is no fixed ceiling. The 2048 tile itself is the classic goal, but the board supports much higher — 4096, 8192, and in theory up to a 131072 tile if you never lose. Your actual score is the sum of every merge value, so longer games produce dramatically higher scores.
Can you play 2048 on mobile?
Yes. 2048 works on any modern phone or tablet. Swipe in the direction you want the tiles to move — up, down, left, or right — and the whole board shifts that way. The same rules and board size apply as on desktop.
What happens after you reach 2048?
Nothing stops — you can keep playing. Once you hit 2048 the game continues spawning new tiles and you can push for 4096, 8192, or higher. The only way the game ends is when the board fills up and no two adjacent tiles match, leaving no legal move.
